When something of this magnitude takes place, there is genuine shock at the discovery that this narrow view they took as nearly universal is, in fact, in the minority and offensive to others on the broad left.

We need a name for this phenomenon where Boomer-Democrats hear their Progressive children voice their crazy, evil political positions and then go:

“Oh, that’s crazy and evil.... They must not mean that! I think they’re trying to say [inserts much more reasonable sentiment]. I agree with that. See? Democrats are Progressive!”

No matter how clearly they tell you what you believe, or how deranged their beliefs are, you just convince yourself that they have the same normie Democrat beliefs that you do--but they don’t.

Consequently, this phenomenon seems to have risen in proportion to the rise of “Hey, buddy..” parenting. You know, the permissive parents who act like their sh*tty kid’s friends instead of parents.

“Hey, buddy. Would you mind putting your shoes on? We’re late for soccer practice.”

“Hey, buddy. Would you mind now swearing at your mom? It hurts her feelings.”

“Hey, buddy. Would you mind not digging holes in the neighbors yard? It’s getting expensive to fill them in. Thanks, champ!”
