I have no doubt that people living on Martha's Vineyard are uncomfortable living around immigrants, but here in the suburbs we have plenty of them and no one, not even the people voting for Trump, have any problems with it. Illegal immigration is a losing issue because it looks chaotic, but majorities of BOTH parties favor increases in legal immigration.
I think because the long standing problems that have plagued the southern border—and southern hemisphere in general—have long been inadequately addressed, the patience of a more generous American populace has grown thin. We can’t do what was attempted in the early 2010s, or even what Reagan did during his presidency in this moment. The opportunity has been squandered for a more left-leaning immigration policy. It’s all going to the right. The question we have to ask ourselves especially as Democrats is how long until we have room to move back to the traditional Democratic Party position? Only time will tell. But if we don’t win this next election, it will be worse than we could ever have imagined.
I've noticed that you never pointed out the border chaos since 2020 has largely been about ASYLUM SEEKERS, which are something fundamentally different from the more traditional type of illegal immigrants (who are essentially clandestine workers).
Do you think most left-leaning people are taking the globalist view and believe that immigration is so beneficial for the immigrants themselves that it must be encouraged even if it has a negative impact on the citizen population?
I knew it was a wrap when I saw that Tiktok with the Uber driver from Guyana. Thick ass accent himself talking about "They don't belong here. We have to make America great again." Yeah, that progressive shit is over with now. The grand experiment that people are better than they actually are is dead, and DSA and progressives need to throw dirt on it. Clinton and Obama were both hawkish on immigration, and neither lost Latino voters because of it. Harris just needs to lean in on being a Cop/Prosecutor and go the Clinton/Obama route. Thats where the American people are.
Americans are fine with foreigners in the community -- until the community becomes foreign to them. If Martha's Vineyard can't handle a few busloads of immigrants, imagine the impact on, say, a small town in Alabama. Why is Muscle Shoals supposed to just accept the problem being dumped on them? Are they less American than Martha's Vineyard? I have just explained the entire career of Mo Brooks. No one "hated foreigners" around here in 2010. Brooks did not say "vote for me if you hate immigrants." He responded to the anxiety of voters in the 5th District who felt too much was being demanded of them by faraway elites. Six years later, Trump held his very first rally in North Alabama. Democrats will suffer on this issue until they stop ascribing popular discontent to Evil Bad Nazi Orange Man Racisms and admit they screwed up on border policy.

A clear eyed view that is unfortunately all too rare on the left.

I think that’s the view of most on the left who think it through and who are not personally impacted by it, yes. A luxury value in other words.
