Call this piece “We Need To Talk About Optics, Part Deux.”

It’s been a banner week for the left, as their attempts to rise and fight Donald Trump’s brutal anti-immigration tactics get thwarted by some of the most catastrophically bad, yet unsurprising, optics I’ve seen. Protests in Los Angeles over ICE raids and detention of immigrants, many of whom were not undocumented and some even citizens, got overshadowed by sporadic violence: burning cars and vandalism triggered by provocateurs who got lumped in as part of the movement. The violence forced activists and Democratic officials to talk about something other than Trump’s incomptent and increasingly unpopular immigration policies.

Protestors across the country have even been rallying for immigrants while…waving Palestinian flags and praising Hamas. Ah, the omnipresent monocause. Make sure you're masked up to prevent the spread of Long COVID.

What does Gaza have to do with immigration? Glad you asked.

One sign at a Los Angeles rally claims that both Los Angeles and Gaza are colonized - possibly, maybe, a half-assed reference to California formerly being part of Mexico before the United States won it in the Mexican-American War in 1848.1

Now, the latest viral video, a screenshot seen above, features an interaction in Manhattan’s West Village where two demonstrators blocking traffic on West Houston Street got into a heated argument with a black woman whose car was blocked by the protest. In the video, the woman got out of her car and approached the two protesters, asking them to move. The protestors told her they wouldn’t move - the cause is more important. The woman told them that she had to go to work, to which one of the two protestors, a creepy-looking white man with a man bun and crows feet, laughed and mocked her, responding with a juvenile retort: “Oh nooooo, not work.”

Is this helping immigrants?
