Former Gov. Dave Freudenthal won an upset victory in 2002 over a fractured Republican Party and was consistently one of the most popular governors in the country. He won 70 percent of the vote in 2006, sweeping every county. In that same election, Democrat Gary Trauner came within 1,000 votes of winning the state’s sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat later held by Liz Cheney. We all know what happened to her.
