Even 'Working Class Champions' Cannot Tame The Right Wing Propaganda Machine
Since his “Fight the Oligarchy” tour earlier this spring, which brought out tens of thousands of people to rallies in swing states, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) has received some criticism that has surprised many of his supporters.
Sanders and his protégé, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), visited battleground congressional districts in states like Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin to blast Elon Musk and the oligarchic elements of Trump’s government. Supporters hoped the tour would make an impact on working-class voters who have supported Trump in the past and have fallen for the agenda of right-wing populism. It’s still too early to say if it will make an impact, and Trump’s tanking numbers on the economy suggest that it was hitting the right notes. Still, the right-wing attack machine has landed at least one effective attack on Sanders and AOC involving the tour, one that has become so salient on the right, even figures Sanders and AOC hoped to be allies are promoting it: the way they traveled to the rallies.
