Due to the holiday week and a visit from family, THE GREAT AMERICAN POLITICAL ROADTRIP was delayed a bit. Still, I’m happy to bring you this week’s edition a day later than usual:

This week, we visit two states, one that hasn’t voted Republican for President since the 1970s and one that hasn’t voted Democratic for President since the 1970s. Despite this record, they are both very different down the ballot. One state has been reasonably good for the other party until recently, while the other has been solidly behind the party that has won the presidency for several decades. These two states are a pretty good representation of why the Republican Party, despite rarely winning the popular vote in nationwide elections, can wield so much power and move farther toward the end of the spectrum than the Democratic Party.
